Listen To My World
A new installation to be exhibited from October 2021 - May 2023 at Transit (Leuven/Belgium), Spor (Aarhus/Denmark), hcmf// (Huddersfield/UK), Wilde Western (Kortrijk/Belgium), Onassis Cultural Centre (Athens/Greece), Time of Music (Viitasaari/Finland)
Listen to my World is born out of an interest in listening to stories less often told, and the belief that these stories matter. But what is more, that they may show us different ways of thinking about ourselves and the world, and how we might change the structures that permeate society and privilege only the very few.
Listen to my World reflects on what it is that makes us feel included or excluded from a place or space, and proposes that listening to each other’s experiences of these spaces and places could afford us a way to be more empathetic and generous toward each other.
I was fortunate enough to meet with some wonderful people and was curious to hear their stories, to find out more about how they experience, see, hear, and understand spaces in the places they call home.
Listen to my World exists as a website, audio-visual installation, and this publication (all launching in November 2021). On the website, Adele Jones, Marisa De Picker, Pauliina Näsänen, Razane H. and Salam Susu share some of their stories and thoughts and offer a glimpse into their worlds.
The audio-visual installation is my contemplation on the experience of these thought-provoking encounters.
In the publication and the website, excerpts of Adele, Marisa, Pauliina, Razane and Salam’s blogs, the music and some sketches from the installation, and two specially written contributions by Ethiraj Gabriel Dattatreyan and Oge Kpalukwuozu-Nwosu are gathered together.
This project is part of the Sounds Now project co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
